mindmaps
I used the FreeMind mindmap program in a Electricity lesson on GPP. This was as a start to the topic, to elicit what the children knew about electricity, and what misconceptions they might have had. I made sure to try out the software prior to the lesson. I was able to use it but found it quite fiddly and hard to orientate. I went ahead and used it in the lesson. Our class mindmap on electricity can be found below.
The FreeMind software is brilliant for people who want to create a complex interactive mindmap (as shown in the video below). However, I find it too complicated to use, edit and orientate.
I think for use in the primary classroom by children and teachers, mindmap software needs to be simple and vibrant. Therefore, I looked on the internet for other software options.
Bubbl.us is an online site which allows you to easily create a mindmap and export is as an image. I found it very easy to use and orientate. It is also a lot more vibrant and exciting looking than FreeMind. You can change the appearance of mindmaps on FreeMind but it is fiddly and takes more time. Bubble.us doesn't need to be downloaded and installed on computers, it is available online. However, e-safety issues have to be considered.
I created a mindmap on Bubbl.us about the use of mindmaps in lessons!
