There are several informative videos on TES connect created by Teachers TV showing podcasts being created in schools. I watched these videos to understand what podcasts were and how they are created in schools.

Podcasting is an engaging and fun way in which children can celebrate their learning and share their knowledge and experiences. This can be with their school community or the rest of the world!
A podcast is a form of communication. It is an audio recording similar to a radio show, but it isn't live and can be accessed whenever and how often a listener likes.
Podcasts are a great tool, since it provides children with a purpose for their learning. Children know they have a potentially huge audience. They also have to plan and write scripts meaning they are writing for a real purpose. Their writing skills are not only improved, but also their speaking and listening skills are greatly enhanced.
A podcast can be a series or a single recording often placed on the school website for parents and the school community to listen to.
It could be a radio show, an interview, a news report, about elements of school life or on a specific topic the children are learning about.
A recording device such as a microphone is needed. Microphones are often built into laptops or tablets. Recording software is also required.

Programme of Study:
Aim: are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Attainment Targets:
KS1:
- Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content.
KS2:
- Understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the world-wide web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration.
- Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information.
Podcasts are an effective and useful teaching tool
- Children work collaboratively and utilise teamwork skills.
- Provides a real purpose for learning.
- Celebrates children's learning and achievements.
- Inexpensive
- Can be easy to make.
- Builds communication, speaking, listening, writing skills.
- Encourages the use of technology.
- Engaging and different.
- Parents feel involved in their children's learning.
Issues to think about
- Careful with copyright laws. Especially in relation to music.
- It can take a long time to create and edit a finished piece of work.
- Much more time consuming than a written task.
- Can be difficult to edit
- May be a challenge to include the whole class actively at the same time when creating the podcasts. Perhaps children could work in pairs if their is enough equipment. Otherwise a carousel of acitivies could be a good method to employ.
Audio Programs
Audacity is an audio track recorder and editor.
I watched several tutorial videos for audacity. I did not have microphone to make my own recording to edit. I hope to use what I have learnt to create podcasts with my FPP class. It could be based on a science topic. Otherwise, after SATs would be an ideal time, they could even do a news report about their residential trip.

It is quite tricky to use at first, I think I would create steps to success or a guide for children, and definitely model how to use it. I think editing the recording can be as simple or complex as you make it, depending on what effects you want to use. Links: |
Audioboom
Is a rebrand of audioboo and the interface has been completely changed. It is now an app which allows you to listen, create and share podcasts. It is available on Google Play, Windows and Apple which means it is far more accessible than other apps. Although, it appears a tablet device would still be needed. I downloaded the app on my iPhone. Their is simple red button which allows you to make a 10 minute recording. You can then 'trim' the recording. The editing is far more basic and the interface is much simpler than audacity. However, you can only publish the recording to the audioboom site. This would be useful if it was just a small project or class based activity where the result would be presented at the end of the class. If the purpose of the popdcast was to create a series or make it accesible on the school website, then this wouldn't be the right app. https://audioboom.com/about/education
The original audioboo could be accessed by signing up to www.edmodo.com. However, you then need to search for it and pay for it is a minimal price. I think this would probably worthwhile, considering it would be for whole class use.

Soundcloud
Souncloud is a social platform where people can create and share sounds.
You can record audio and upload it to Soundcloud very easily using a computer. There is even an option to edit on the app.

Soundcloud can be a useful drama resource.
During a drama session we were played a rainforest soundscape created by teachers using their voices alone. We then had to create in groups a soundscape of the Gruffalo's forest, to perform to the rest of the class.
A production of a soundscape could be a prerequisite to writing. Children could produce a piece of writing describing a setting.
